Yajooj And Majooj (Gog And Magog)

Book of the End: Great Trials and Tribulations

By Ibn Katheer

After ‘Eesa ibn Maryam kills the Dajjaal, Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog) will come out. And through the blessings of ‘Eesa’s supplications, Allah will then destroy them in a single night. Allah it said:

“Until when Yajooj and Maim] (Gog and Magog) are let loose (from their barrier), and they swoop down from every mound. And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror. (They will say): “Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this; nay, but we were Zalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.). “Qur’an 21:96-97.

And Allah said regarding the story of Thil-Qarnain:

“Then he followed (another way), until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them (those two mountains), a people who scarcely understood a word. They said: “O Dhul-Qarnain! Verily! Yalu] and Majuj (Gog and Magog) are doing great mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute in order that you might erect a barrier between us and them?” He said: “That (wealth, authority, and power) in which my Lord had established me is better (than your tribute). So help me with strength (of men). I will erect between you and them a barrier.”

“Give me pieces (blocks) of iron,” then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said: “Blow,” till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said: “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.” So they (Yajuj and Majuj (Gag and Magog)) were made powerless to scale it or dig through it. (Dhul-Qarnain) said: “This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the Promise of my Lord comes, He shall level it down to the ground. And the Promise of my Lord is ever true.” And on that Day (i.e. the Day Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog) will come out), We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another, and the Trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together.” Qur’an 18: 85-99.

In the Tafseer of the story of Dhul-Qarnain – that he built the barrier from iron and copper between two mountains – we mentioned that Dhul-Qarnain said, “This is a mercy from my Lord — that through the barrier, this people who spread corruption in the earth are separated from the people.” “But when the Promise of my Lord comes”. this is referring to the time when the barrier will be destroyed and leveled down to the ground. “And the Promise of my Lord is ever true”: i.e., this matter must come to pass. And at that time, Allah “shall leave them to surge like waves on one another.” And then they will go forth among the people, traveling quickly through every mound. After that time, the trumpet will be blown. In another Verse, Allah said:

“Until, when Ya’jooj and Majuj (Gag and Magog) are let loose (from their barrier), and they swoop down from every mound. And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror ‘ Qur’an 21:96, 97. Continue reading

Eesa Ibn Maryam

Book of the End: Great Trials and Tribulations

By Ibn Katheer

The Messenger of Allah ‘Eesa Ibn Maryam Will Descend From The Heaven Of The Earth To The Earth At The End Of Time

Allah said:

“And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” . but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Eesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not (i.e. ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). But Allah raised him (‘Eesa) up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise” Qur’an 4:157,158

“And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him (‘Eesa, as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being), before his death” Qur’an 4:159

Regarding “before his death” in this last Verse, Ibn Jareer related in his Tafseer that Ibn ‘Abbaas) said, “Before the death of ‘Eesa Ibn Maryam.” The chain of this narration is authentic.

Did ‘Eesa Die Or Was He Raised Alive To The Sky?

“And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him (‘Eesa, as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being), before his death” Qur’an 4:159

Regarding this verse, Abu Maalik said that it is referring to when ‘Eesa ibn Maryam will descend and that he is now alive with Allah When he will descend, all will believe in him. Ibn Jareer related this. Ibn Abee Haatim related that a man asked Al-Hasan about this Verse:

“And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him (‘Eesa, as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being), before his death” Qur’an 4:159.

Al-Hasan said, “Before the death of ‘Eesa, Allah raised ‘Eesa to Him and He it will send him (back) before the Day of Resurrection, in a situation wherein both the righteous one and the wicked one will believe in him.” Qataadah ibn Du’aamah, ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Yazeed Ibn Aslam, and others have said the same, which is also established in Bukhaaree and Muslim from Abu Hurairah. As we will mention, one narration is Matiqoof (i.e. Abu Hurairah said it) and another is Marfoo’ (i.e., Abu Hurairah related it from the Prophet A). And Allah’ knows best.

The point is that ‘Eesa ill is alive now in the heavens, and he was not, as the People of the Book claim, crucified; instead, Allah it raised Mm to Him. Before the Day of Resurrection, ‘Eesa will descend from the sky; such is related in Mutawaatir Hadeeth narrations, both in the Ahaadeeth we related regarding the Dajjaal and the Ahaadeeth we will mention shortly. We seek help from Allah and depend upon Him alone. There is neither might nor power except with Allah, the Most-Powerful, the All-Wise, the Most High, the All-Mighty. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Lord of the Noble ‘Arsh (Throne).

It is related from Ibn ‘Abbaas and others that the antecedent of the pronoun in “before his death” is every individual from the People of the Book; if this is authentically narrated from him, then it is contrary to what we have said. But in actuality, the correct meaning and chain of narration is what we have previously mentioned, and what we have explained in sufficient detail in the Book of Tafseer. All praise is for Allah, and all favors and blessings are from Him. Continue reading

Who are Ahl Al Bayt

Q. A brother asked me about who exactly are the ahl al-bait, because all he knows is that when he hears ahl al-bait, he thinks the 12 imams. Is it just from Fatimah, or more than just from her…like Ibn Abbas?

Note to begin that Ahl and Al are the same in meaning. However, Ibn Manzur said in Lisan al-`arab, Al is nobler in usage. Note that in Arabic a man’s “bayt” denotes his wife, and that is also one of the meanings of a man’s “ahl.” See Lisan al-`arab under both entries, where it is also said that “Al” means “ahl” in all the senses of “family,” relatives,” and “wives.”

The following terms all have the same meaning:

a) Ahl al-Bayt = People of the House
b) Al al-Nabi (s) = Family of the Prophet; the Umma
c) Al Bayt al-Nabi (s) = Family of the House of the Prophet
d) `Itrat al-Nabi = [People of the] Mantle of the Prophet

However, in common usage, (a) and (d) have a more restrictive meaning, coinciding with (I) below, whereas (b) and (c) is more inclusive, usually coincide with (I), (II), and (III). The term “Al” (b) is the most inclusive of all, since Nawawi reports among its meanings: “All of the Community.” See his Tahdhib al-asma’ wa al-lughat as well as his Tahrir al-tanbih under the entry “Al.”

The People of the House of the Prophet are those for whom it is unlawful to receive zakat and whom the Prophet ordered all Muslims to respect, honor, and follow. They are:

I. `Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn (in addition to their descendants: Muhassan, Zaynab, and Umm Kulthum [other children of `Ali and Fatima]; among the children of al-Hasan: Zayd, al-Qasim, Abu Bakr, `Abd Allah, `Umar, al-Hasan, `Abd al-Rahman, al-Husayn, `Amr, Muhammad, Ya`qub, Ja`far, Hamza, and Talha; among the children of al-Husayn: Abu Bakr, `Abd Allah, `Ali al-Kabir, `Ali Zayn al-`Abidin, `Umar, Fatima, Sukayna, Zaynab al-Sughra, and Umm Kulthum al-Sughra). Ahlul Bayt – The Family of The Prophet (pbuh)

Allah Says in The Quran: And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless. (Quran-33:33)

In Light of Quran

The Wives of the Prophet are Members of His Household (Ahl Al-Bayt)

Allah wishes only to remove Ar-Rijs from you, O members of the family, and to purify you with a thorough purification[33:33]

Ibn Kathir in his tafsir said – This is a clear statement that the wives of the Prophet are included among the members of his family (Ahl Al-Bayt) here, because they are the reason why this Ayah was revealed, and the scholars are unanimously agreed that they were the reason for revelation in this case, whether this was the only reason for revelation or there was also another reason, which is the correct view. Ibn Jarir recorded that `Ikrimah used to call out in the marketplace

Allah wishes only to remove Ar-Rijs from you, O members of the family, and to purify you with a thorough purification [Quran-33:33]

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Abbas said this concerning the Ayah “This was revealed solely concerning the wives of the Prophet.”

Ibn Kathir also considered The Family of Fatimah as the Ahl-ul-bait (People of the House)

He said in his Tafsir”It was revealed solely concerning the wives of the Prophet .” `Ikrimah said: “Whoever disagrees with me that it was revealed solely concerning the wives of the Prophet , I am prepared to meet with him and pray and invoke the curse of Allah upon those who are lying.” So they alone were the reason for revelation, but others may be included by way of generalization. Ibn Jarir narrated that Safiyyah bint Shaybah said: “`A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, `The Prophet went out one morning wearing a striped cloak of black camel’s hair. Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, came and he wrapped him in the cloak with him. Then Al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him, came and he wrapped him in the cloak with him. Then Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, came and he wrapped her in the cloak with him. Then `Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, came and he wrapped him in the cloak with him, then he said:

Allah wishes only to remove Ar-Rijs from you, O members of the family, and to purify you with a thorough purification.) This was recorded by Muslim. Continue reading
